Walking Breaks

* Book Now from as little as £700 pw

Switzerland is probably the best country in the world for walking holidays with spectacular scenery and a transport network that helps all levels of walkers reach the mountain tops! A break in Nendaz provides it all: snow-capped peaks; high alpine meadows; sunny plateaux; tranquil valleys; mountain streams & waterfalls; picture-perfect picnic stops, cafes and restaurants.

Mountain Walking – the Easy Way

If you thought it was impossible to walk in the mountains without strenuous climbing, think again! There are 100 km of ‘bisse’ paths around Nendaz which allow easy walking with little variation in altitude. The bisses are historic irrigation channels, most still irrigate orchards, vineyards, crops and meadows in the area and all have well maintained paths running beside them. This downloadable bisse map includes details about restaurants, picnic spots, buses and summer lifts.

Routes vary from 5km (Bisse d’en Bas) to 32 km (Bisse de Saxon). You can create your own daily itineraries from Nendaz or catch a bus from Nendaz to Veysonnaz or Siviez in the morning, and spend the rest of the day returning on foot. From May to October the bus leaves Nendaz tourist office to Veysonnaz every Wednesday/Friday/Sunday and to Siviez on Thursday/Saturday.

Hiking Excursions

For those wanting more vigorous hiking, there are over 250km of hiking paths. The lifts open from late June to October to provide even more access to higher hiking for example Tracouet at 2200m, or Combatseline at 2100m. Nendaz Tourism offers 3 & 6 days lift passes. Self-guiding is popular if you are familiar with map-reading, if not you can book an experienced mountain guide via the Hiking Office.

A must-do trip is to the glacier on Mont Fort, with its extraordinary view of fifty 4,000m peaks including the Matterhorn and Mont Blanc. To help you choose routes right across the Valais, there are maps with plenty of information about thematic trails, duration, level of difficulty.

Visitor Comments
  • We stayed here to ski. A fantastic location, with both the lift and ski bus an easy walk. The apartment itself is stunning with everything you need and more. Views from the balcony are fantastic, a great place to stay in, but also with plenty of options for eating out a short stroll away. We will be back!
